Clyde Marine Surveys was founded by Daniel Smith who spent his life growing up amongst boats on the Clyde.

Having cruised the West Coast of Scotland as a child he went on to teach the RYA scheme at the National Watersports Centre where he became an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean examiner for sail, Yachtmaster Ocean for power and an MCA Master of Vessels <200GT. He delivered boats around Scotland, Europe and completed seven transatlantic ocean crossings. His next big achievement was managing and skippering a Clipper 70, Derry~Londonderry~Doire to 2nd place in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. He got the bug for offshore racing and went on to skipper in several Fastnet and Round Ireland races.

In 2019 he self surveyed his Salona 40 which he refitted, coded and used for 5 years as a successful sail training boat teaching the RYA scheme for his company Sailing InTuition out of Largs Yacht Haven. During this time he also surveyed and refitted an Archambault A31 which he went on to skipper in the Round Ireland Yacht Race coming 2nd in class.

In 2024 Daniel  completed a practical course in Marine Survey Training which he passed with Merit. He went on to join Marine Survey Associates and become an affiliate member of the International Institute of Marine Surveying and establish Clyde Marine Surveys.
